1.1 Short Title, Extent & Commencement
The Customs Act, 1962 came into force on 1 February 1963. It extends to the whole of India and applies to all goods imported into or exported from India, providing the legal framework for levy and collection of customs duty.

1.2 Definitions — Section 2
Section 2 contains 51 definitions. Key terms include bill of entry, coastal goods, customs area, customs station, dutiable goods, export, importer, and proper officer.
📌 Key Point
"Customs area" means the area of a customs station and includes any area in which imported goods or export goods are ordinarily kept before clearance by Customs.
1.3 Officers of Customs — Section 3
The CBIC (Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs) has power to appoint officers at various grades including Principal Commissioner, Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, and Appraiser.
